Before I migrated to New Zealand, I worked for Sri Lankan Centre in excellence in management education: Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce as a Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management and Integrative Studies in Management.
I also chaired high level committees at university level such as Strategic Planning Committee, MBA programme Development Committee, Committee for Formulation of Open and Distance Learning. Currently, I am working as a Senior Lecturer in Business and Management, Strategic Management, Change Management and in the fields of Marketing in the School of Business and Tourism at Waiariki Institute of Technology, one of the leading institutes of technology in New Zealand. In addition, I am the Research Coordinator for the School Research Committee. I have over 15 years of experience in teaching, research, consultancy and training in the fields of Management; especially in Strategic Management, Contemporary Issues in Management, Strategic Leadership, Strategic Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Integrative Studies in Management, Indigenous Practices of Management, Alternative Research Methodologies in Management Research as a Senior Lecturer and consultant and trainer for universities, vocational and professional programmes, and industry/businesses in Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand.
I obtained my Ph.D. at the University of Queensland, Australia and my Ph.D. thesis was awarded as an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in 2004 by the University of Queensland for its exciting contribution to advancing the field of Strategic Management and its research methodology. I have also completed my Masters Degree: M.Com. and Bachelor Degree: B.Sc. in Business Administration (with distinction). I also obtained Licentiate Certificates part 1 and ll in Chartered Accountancy in Sri Lanka and completed the compulsory Training for four years at a Chartered Accountants’ firm.
My research focus is the exploration of strategic processes, especially strategic innovation through strategic leadership and entrepreneurialism of organizations within a wider socio-cultural and political contexts to aid development and implementation of effective and innovative strategy in organizations. I have conducted various interdisciplinary research studies in this area, with topics including: power and politics in strategy processes in a developing country context; corporate social responsibility; socio-cultural and politico-economic context effects shaping organizational strategy processes; strategy implementation and social cost; and social identity in strategic leadership in organizations. I have been working as a reviewer for several International conferences and peer review conference proceedings in the fields of strategy, marketing and HRM, especially critical studies in Management.
I have an extensive experience and capabilities in teaching, pedagogical guidance/supervision of academic staff and students, assessment and moderation work, active preparation of and participation in administrative work, and contribution to the scientific development of the research area especially in context sensitive innovative strategy processes and management practices in businesses/industry. I have capabilities in business/management education and industry/business experience for programme/course development, and my ability to generate relationships with industry and community especially within diverse socio-cultural contexts.
Furthermore, I have done many consultancies and training for the industry in strategic planning, contemporary management practices, strategic thinking, strategic leadership, strategic marketing and interdisciplinary research studies. I have an ability to improve/develop programmes/courses based on the future needs of the world of work by aligning them with the needs of users.
I am planning to do research and projects in strategic tourism to apply my knowledge and expertise in broad field of business strategy and integrative studies in management.
