As a PhD candidate in the Department of Tourism at the University of Otago, I hold a Masters in Tourism Management from the University of Queensland and am fully funded in my present dotoral work by a University of Otago Pretigious PhD scholarship. I am currently interested in interdisciplinary constructions of the research for self, long term travel, and the sociology of alternative lifestyles. Additional research interests include the experience of adventure in leisure and tourism and environmental impact issues in alpine trekking. My PhD research , which underpins this presentation, will soon be taking me to the Indian Himalaya for four months, where I will be conducting interviews with long-term travellers.
