I was born and raised in Singapore, and received my early education in the country. I graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Masters in Geography in 1994, and earned a PhD (Geography) from McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1997. Since then I have been an Assistant Professor (1997-2002) and Associate Professor (2003-present) in the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore. In 2003, I spent my sabbatical as a Research Scholar at East-West Center (University of Honolulu, Hawaii), and in February-April 2004 as a Research Fellow at the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute (Auckland University of Technology).
