Anna was employed in New Zealand's tourism industry for over two decades. She worked for Lands & Survey and then the Department of Conservation at Egmont, Tongariro and Aoraki/Mt Cook National Parks from 1985 until 1994. She has also worked for Cardrona Ski Area, the New Zealand Antarctic Programme and as Operations Co-ordinator for the Helicopter Line Mt Cook. Anna was co-owner/operator of Southern Alps Guiding based at Mt Cook Village from 1989 to 1994 and national secretary/treasurer for the NZ Mountain Guides' Association from 1992 to 1994. She was a business partner in a company specialising in guided climbing and sea kayaking from 1995 - 2002.
Anna teaches a variety of papers in the areas of entrepreneurship, heritage tourism, ecotourism and tourist behaviour.
Anna's research interests include ecotourism and adventure tourism operations; wilderness management; indigenous tourism development; rural tourism; environmental certification systems; tourism entrepreneurship; visitor interpretation/education and heritage tourism.
Anna worked in collaboration with James Higham on a nationwide New Zealand ecotourism study 1999-2001 which was funded by the Foundation of Research, Science and Technology. Industry reports arising from this research project are available in PDF format on this website.
In 2004, Anna is undertaking a research project exploring nature based tourism entrepreneurs. This project is funded by a University of Otago Research Grant (ORG).
She recently completed her PhD thesis examining visitor experiences of cultural landscapes in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
