Sam Judd is co founder of a New Zealand charity called Sustainable Coastlines. Educated in New Zealand and Latin America, he has spearheaded large scale coastal cleanup events and is in the process of developing a formula for waste management in small island states.

Robert Oliver is writing a cookbook to showcase Pacific Island cuisine, not only for food and book lovers, but primarily to elevate the attitude and relationship between Pacific Islanders themselves and their culinary culture. Tourism is the largest economic machine in the South Pacific Islands, yet most of the hotel food product is imported. At the same time, there is abundance of land and farming skills and farmers. Robert’s presentation discusses how to join the two sectors: the benefits, the barriers, and a exploration of solutions.

This seminar presents the results of quantitative survey research of visitors to the
2009 ANZAC Day commemoration service in Gallipoli. Visitors’ motives of patriotism,
pilgrimage, the representation of family, sharing with friends, and desire to travel are
recorded. Contrasting motives are recognised amongst Australian and New Zealand visitors,
young Aussies and Kiwis living in the UK, Britons, and visitors from other nations.

While the past 60 years or so have seen a quickly growing amount of scholarly research into
journalism practices, much of it has been restricted to the arena of hard news. However, the past two
decades have seen other forms of journalisms come to the fore. One such case is travel journalism in
newspapers and on television, as well as online. Given news organisations’ cuts in international news
reporting, TV travel shows and newspaper travel sections are increasingly important in representing
foreign cultures, and thus important for communication research.
