Past Mphil students

Rose Wood

Rose trained as a chef in London and spent fourteen years studying, cooking, teaching and travelling in the UK and Europe before returning home to work as a chef lecturer and hospitality management tutor at AUT. After moving to Rotorua, (south of Auckland) the relationship between food and tourism became of major interest to Rose and it was a natural progression for her to begin studies in this subject area.

Rose currently works as a lecturer in tourism studies at Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua, and completed her MPhil with NZTRI in the Faculty of Applied Humanities, AUT University. The study focuses on the role of food in tourism, in particular the importance of local regional food network groups; the linking of food and tourism in regional tourism strategy; and in the case of New Zealand, the emergence of strong regional cuisine based on quality and freshness of local produce, in the development of food based tourism.

As a distance student it is great to know that I could access support and help from NZTRI and its members at any time.

Tanu Jayaswal

I was pursuing an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) at AUT. My thesis topic was Event tourism: induced tourism. My research interests are events, destination management and DQM (destination quality management). I hold an MBA degree with a major in tourism from India. NZTRI has given me the opportunity and exposure to meet tourism operators and carry out diverse research opportunities thus increasing my knowledge of tourism research. The multinational environment has given me an opportunity to interact with different cultures and experience unity in diversity. One can learn practical issues of tourism research from the experiences of research officers at NZTRI. I wish to complete my PhD with NZTRI in future.

Amira Fathimath

I am from the Maldives. I joined NZTRI as an MPhil student in 2007. I  completed my thesis on the topic of “Evaluating the role of local food in Maldives tourism marketing and development”. Prior to joining NZTRI, I have completed Bachelor of Philosophy and Master of Arts in Hospitality Management from Birmingham College of Food and Creative Studies, UK.
My research interests include sustainable tourism development, tourism impacts and culinary tourism. The support from my supervisors together with the helpful NZTRI team has provided a positive and enlightening environment for my studies and a very enjoyable experience for me.

Catherine Crofts

Catherine Crofts joined NZTRI in October 2008 as a part time MPhil student. Catherine’s research explored whether the MoreFM Triwoman event series will facilitate an increased level of physical activity in these women three months after the event with a particular focus on those women who were considered to be inactive or sedentary prior to entering the event.

Anne Markward received her MPhil from the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. She has continued to make a name for herself in the area of travel writing – contributing to the work of photographer Gary Ladd.
