Tourism Entrepreneurship in South-Eastern Europe: A case study of Croatia

This project explores the conditions and characteristics of tourism entrepreneurship in the transitional economy of Croatia, former republic of Yugoslavia (looking particularly at issues of gender). Initially, the project was funded by the Victoria University, Faculty of Commerce and Administration research grant; the local government of Sibensko-Kninska Zupanija, Croatia has funded the second phase.

Activities and outputs
This work now serves as a base to develop into a bigger project in collaboration with the Institute for Tourism, Zagreb. Dr Sanda Weber, Director of the Institute is Ateljevic’s research partner with network connections in agencies such as the EU, the World Bank and the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.

Weber has awarded Ateljevic the position of its Honorary Research fellow. With this aim, she visited the Institute in Zagreb in December/January 2004 where they worked on funding possibilities and various projects (was involved in producing a marketing report for one of the regional tourism organisations on the Croatian coast). The NZTRI and the Institute in Croatia funded the trip. Ateljevic also plans to combine another visit to the Institute as part of the conference/research trip in June.
