Abstract:

An essential component of sustainable tourism development is growing the local community’s livelihood, a factor often overlooked by tourism planners and developers. Surf tourism development in the third world has the potential to adversely impact the societal values and cultural traditions of the local community. The purpose of the proposed study is to assess the effects of surf tourism development on the local communities of the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia.

 

Biography:

Nick’s passion for surfing and interest in sustainable tourism development is a unique combination that has evolved over the past decade. Travelling to numerous surf destinations around the world has made him aware of the adverse effects surf tourism can have on local communities. Nick is focused on developing strategies through which the local community can benefit from surf tourism as well as the operators.
